A Rockin’ Thank you to Dr. Robert Quartermain
Dr. Robert Quartermain, a distinguished geologist and mining executive, has made significant contributions to Earth sciences through both his industry leadership and philanthropic endeavours. A graduate of the University of New Brunswick (UNB) with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, he furthered his academic pursuits by earning a Master of Science in Mineral Exploration from Queen’s University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from UNB in 2009. With over four decades of experience in the mining industry, Dr. Quartermain played a transformative role in precious metals exploration and development. As President of Silver Standard Resources Inc. (1985–2010), he led the company’s growth from a small exploration firm to a multi-billion-dollar enterprise with producing mines and advanced development projects.
Driven by a deep commitment to education and Earth sciences, Dr. Quartermain made a $1-million philanthropic contribution to UNB, enabling the establishment of the Quartermain Earth Science Centre, which opened in 2011. Located in the Forestry and Geology Building, the centre features interactive exhibits, including dinosaur replicas, a mineral showcase, a working seismograph, and a large-scale Earth model, alongside a state-of-the-art teaching and computer lab. Through his visionary leadership and generosity, Dr. Quartermain has not only advanced geoscience education but also fostered greater public engagement in Earth sciences, inspiring future generations of geologists and researchers.
