QESC Volunteer Policy – Summary

1. Purpose and Principles

  • The QESC values volunteers and their contributions to its mission as a free and globally accessible centre of knowledge and research.

  • Volunteers are not employees and are not paid for their time. Either party can end the volunteering relationship at any time.

2. Joining the Program

  • The QESC welcomes a diverse range of volunteers. When opportunities are available, they are posted online.

  • Prospective volunteers may be invited for a meeting to determine suitability. The QESC’s decision is final.

  • Volunteers may require reference checks. 

  • Volunteers under 18 may only participate through recognized programmes.

3. Induction and Training

  • Volunteers receive role-specific training, health and safety guidance, and an overview of their tasks and timeline.

4. Expenses

  • The QESC currently does not reimburse expenses for volunteers.

5. Supervision and Support

  • Volunteers are assigned a staff supervisor and may contact the Curator or the Department of Earth Sciences with any concerns.

  • Volunteers may not speak on behalf of the QESC or enter into agreements on its behalf.

6. Diversity and Inclusion

  • The QESC is committed to inclusivity and will work with volunteers to accommodate individual needs and ensure accessibility.

7. Health, Safety, and Liability

  • Volunteers must attend relevant training to ensure a safe environment.

  • Volunteers are covered by the QESC’s insurance except in cases of negligence or misconduct.

8. Confidentiality

  • Volunteers must respect the QESC’s confidentiality and act as positive representatives of the institution.

9. Data Protection

  • Personal data will be handled according to Canadian Law and UNB’s Privacy Policy.

  • Volunteers who handle sensitive data must also follow the appropriate guidelines and training.
